Subject: A Doggett Fiction...

Disclaimer: Scully, Doggett and Mulder do not belong to me. (Imagine that.) They do however belong to Chris Carter, 1013, and the evil, evil, beloved FOX network.

Summary: Doggett's thoughts on Dana Katherine Scully and what his role in The X-Files could be.
Spoilers: Within, Without and Patience are the big ones. References to past cases.

Author's notes: I LIKE Doggett. I like the way he and Scully interact and I like Robert Patrick, the actor who plays him. I wanted to be one of the first to give a Doggett POV fiction out there. *= There was almost a year between Deep Throat/Squeeze. Pilot is 1992 and then Squeeze is 1993. That means Mulder and Scully were working together for a *year* that we didn't see.
Dedication: Robert Patrick for shaking things up for us X-Philes.

I'd heard the rumors about their partnership for years. How Mulder didn't quite trust her. Then later about how they were sleeping together. I don't remember all of them, I never paid much attention.
I'd known Mulder way back when. Not well, just known him. I'd heard of his track record with VCS, and then how he had thrown it away for the x-files. Again, I didn't pay that much attention.
Now I wish I'd paid a little more attention to the rumors and water cooler talk about Agents Mulder and Scully. Maybe a little more knowledge into what had made them "The Spooky's" would help me, now that I am working with ‘Mrs. Spooky.'
I prefer to call her Agent Scully.
She's a beautiful woman, my new partner. Not so much in the ‘traditional' way, but in the ‘smart is sexy' way. Her red hair seems to always be perfect, even when she's trying to defend herself against a flying bat the size of a man. Her eyes are bright with knowledge and a confidence that is amazing in itself. However, they also have a fear that comes with knowledge. These are eyes that have seen more than any human should have to see.
There's a glow about my partner that I can't quite place, and if I didn't know better I would swear it was a pregnancy glow. But like I said, I know better. Reading those files told me the story of her abduction, cancer and barrenness.
I can tell Scully misses Mulder. I found her sleeping curled up in one of his shirts and then the way she was fingering his nameplate when she thought I wasn't looking. I assume that their relationship was more than just platonic, but I don't think it's my business to pry into her personal life.
Their working relationship is what I think I should be trying to better know and understand. Their solve rate was apparently one of the highest in bureau history; partly due to the leaps that cracked the case, leaps that Agent Mulder could mystically dream up and then proceed to take. But I think that there were other factors in their partnership that lead to the high solve rate. Respect, trust, but most of all friendship. They were friends and trusted each other with their lives. That unspoken bond between partners is extremely important for the case to be solved. Mulder and Scully had it. I'm trying my hardest for Agent Scully and I to have even a fraction of what she and Mulder had so that we may possibly keep the x-files -and each other- alive.
Keeping the x-files strong without Mulder will be a challenge for us. He was -is the expert, as Agent Scully puts it. She's just the scientist who has seen a lot. Still, she's the senior agent in our division. I respect that fact, and so I let her take the lead with that Bat case. I let her go into the attic first. She's been here, in the x-files, almost nine years* and knows more of the ‘standard procedure' for solving cases like these.
Well, as ‘standard' as procedure can get on cases like these. I have the feeling that without Mulder, Scully will be taking the leaps. And leaps aren't normal police work, but from what I've seen, they appear normal in the x-files. I may have to learn to throw logic out the window some.
They've had some bizarre cases. Liver eating mutants, arctic worms, sewer dwelling creatures, Scully's abduction, cannibalistic small town residents, a boy who could use his body as a human heart jump starter, a killer who almost ‘pushed' Mulder to shoot Scully, and well, you get the idea.
They've also both been in the hospital more times than I can count. Mulder especially. To be honest I'm surprised they're both still alive.
Well, Scully is alive. Mulder is MIA.
I have to have faith that he is alive. For my partner, for Scully. And for me, so I don't lose hope that I can keep these files safe for Mulder when we find him.
Not if we find him, when we find him.
