I'm assuming he went up to New England to visit his mother (I'd hope so, anyway, since it turned out to be her last Christmas) and she went out to California to visit her brother and his family or maybe just stayed in the D.C. area and celebrated Christmas with her Mom.
I wasn't really counting "visting relatives" as "vacations".
