Mayor Wallace should get his facts straight before he makes comments to the Cariboo Observer! On the front page of the March 6, 2002 edition of the paper, in an article about the Red Bluff/Dragon Lake city expansion, Mayor Wallace makes the comment, "When they see the tax increase the province has in mind for people outside the municipalities, they will be shocked. Up until now, THEY HAVEN'T PAID FOR POLICING OR FOR ROADS, BUT THEY SOON WILL." Well, Mayor Wallace is WRONG about Red Bluff/Dragon Lake (and other rural area) residents not paying for any policing or road costs up until now. If people take their property tax notices and read the back of them, they will see a section called TAX LEVY INFORMATION and in this section, under 'Provincial Rural Tax', it states that the Provincial Rural Tax "supports rural programs, including POLICE PROTECTION and PUBLIC ROAD MAINTENANCE". This means that all rural tax payers DO pay for policing and road costs.
I, for one, DO NOT want to be forced to join the city limits and I will fight it as hard and as long as I possibly can. I will definitely be at the next public meeting about the Phase III expansion. I would have attended the first public meeting if it had been advertised properly, but I didn't find out about it until a couple of weeks after it had taken place.
Mayor Wallace, be BRAVE, and hold a referendum to see if the residents of Red Bluff/Dragon Lake really do want to become a part of the city limits and pay thousands of dollars for water which we won't even get for about 5 years! And on top of the HIGHER taxes we will get to pay more for sewer, water and garbage pickup! I say NO THANK YOU, I like living in a rural area.
