Subject: Nicholas Fitzgerald????

Here is something interesting I thought I would post on the message board. It is in regard to Nicholas Fitzgerald who wrote the book "Brian Jones: The Inside Story Of The Original Rolling Stone". I myself have always had doubts about his book. This police report just confirms my doubts all the more. To me I always found it odd that no one knew who he was, and there were no photos of him with Brian during a time in the Sixties when he was one of the most well known pop stars. Of course, the bit about him being an 'eye witness' to Brian's 'murder' was another thing I found hard to believe. Apparently the police did too.

LEWIS BRIAN JONES DECEASED

I refer to our telephone conversation of 7 September 1983 concerning the above named and confirm that articles published in the magazine’s “Sunday” on 27 February 1983 and the Gloucestershire Echo dated 24 June 1983 alleged that although a verdict of misadventure was recorded in relation to the death of Mr. JONES he had in fact been murdered.

The author of both these articles was Nicholas FITZGERALD who claims to be a friend of the deceased. He has since been interviewed by Police as a result of which there are doubts as to the veracity of his testimony, which he refuses to substantiate in writing. However, in view of the serious allegations a report was submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions and I enumerate below his observations and recommendations.

“the enquiry into a death of this antiquity should only be re-opened if,
(a) there was sound evidence that a murder, or some other serious offence was committed against JONES;

(b) there was reliable information to suggest that the conclusions of the original police enquiry, and the inquest, was wrong;

(c) there was a prospect of locating any person who had committed a criminal offence.

None of the above apply. All we have here are unsubstantiated allegations from a man who will not make a statement, and whose memory, temperament and motives are questionable. I do not consider that the Police should seek to re-interview anyone here. The slightest move in that direction would engender publicity and there are insufficient grounds to consider that it would be either worthwhile, or in the interest of justice”.

In view of the advice received from the Director of Public Prosecutions it is our intention to take no further action in relation to this matter at the present time.

Following your conversation with Mr. Tony STARK of BBC Television he has been in communication with me and I have supplied him with certain information concerning the investigation into the death of Mr. JONES and he has promised to inform me should his research produce any evidence to substantiate Mr. FITZGERALD’s allegations.
