Saturday night was Sly, then Procol Harem (an amazing performance highlighted by their brilliant drummer who had a very unique hard hitting back beat style), then Ten Years After (Alvin Lee was at full power in his prime...I Go Home, See My Baby...), then the largest tower of massive P.A. speakers and amps ever assembled was erected on both sides of the stage for Grand Funk who totally destroyed the place with maybe the best show of their illustrious career...I'm Getting Closer To My Ho...ooommmeee...then the finale had Mark Farner and the bass player facing off center stage in a jamming ad-libbed guitar battle of epic proportions that squeezed out every single watt of power they had in those massive towers...to me Procol Harem was the magic of that night but Friday night Jethro Tull may have performed the best show of their career as well...a stunning show of pure musicianship and showmanship and most the songs from both of their greatest albums, Benefit and Stand Up...And With You There To Help Me...It Probably Wi...ii...iilll...during a drum solo Ian Anderson disappeared backstage and as the song came back into the regular chords he came flying over the amps landed on his feet, grabbed the microphone and sang the verse in perfect timing as he directed the band with his free hand...there may have been equally great moments in rock history but there are none better then Tull's performance at Strawberry Fields...a week later they played the famous Isle Of Wight for 600,000 fans near London and that show is available on DVD and, although great, you can tell they were less intense and not quite able to pull off the same show they did for us...Ian was spent...he goofed off and made fun of himself and joked around with the audience but at Strawberry Fields they came in like they were from another planet, never let on that they were human, blew us away and then disappeared into the night...hope you all realize how lucky you were to see that show...
