Remember this all too well. Drove to the festival on a Friday night with my wife and another couple. The first sign of wierdness to come was waiting in a line of cars for literally hours, only to discover our 2-wheeled "brothers" from Rockford,Ill. had set-up an inprompto parking fee collection center at the enterance to the festival grounds...$10.00 or turn around and leave. Having already spent $15.00 each for advance sale tix,we reluctantly paid. Spent the majority of time circulating between our campsite, and a large, red & white striped circus tent set-up by Charlie Campbell & friends,as the vibe near the stage area was not mellow at all. Saw several instances of bikers randomly starting trouble with passersby(there was NO law enforcement present on-site the entire weekend, save for an occasional police 'copter circling overhead.) By Saturday night, the mood was at it's ugliest. I later talked to one friend whose tent was run over by a motorcycle racing thru a campsite. By this time, the masses had their fill of the bullshit.and realized the bikers were totally outnumbered, and became the aggressors. I remember a scooter being hauled onstage and burned,to the cheers of the remaining crowd. The bikers exited by the only road to the site, meeting out retribution by smashing and/or shooting out the windows of many of the hundreds of cars parked on both sides of the pavement. I heard rumors that the boys were met at the turnoff by a contingent of Wisconsin's finest, who'd been awaiting their arrival, but never heard if that's actually what happened.
Sunday was amazingly mellow compared to the previous 2 days, with a much smaller crowd gathered to watch Chuck Berry and,to me,anyway,a transcendental set preformed by Ravi Shankar. All things mellow with age,but the harsh vibe generated at this gathering stays with me still.
