 My father was a US Navy sailor from 1943 to 1946 when discharged after accident during a covert mission. I believe it was a joint mission with England. While in Africa his unit captured a German ship where the Commander was possibly killed. My father has the SS Officers dagger with blood stains but never spoke of any killing. He just said he took it from the ships commander. I don't know the dates of this action.
He was transported to USNAAB Plymouth Eng aboard the SS Komet from Bremerhaven Germ. on 20June1945
His separation papers said his rate was: cox V_6 (SV)
