My grandfather, James Ross Havens, (Bud), was on the USS Mellette when it arrived in Hawaii. I have a certificate dated November 17, 1944 signed King Kanakanui, 1st listing this date. I'm not sure if he served on this ship or was hitching a ride. I know that he was on the USS Corregidor CVE-58 for some time. I also have an International Date Line certificate listing the USS Santa Isabel at longitude 180 on December 10th, 1944 with his name on it. My other grandather was a submariner, but he never spoke of his missions. He simply stated he was in the Japs' back yard.
