The new SAMPSON VETERANS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY signs were unveiled a couple of weeks ago and are in place at both ends of route 96A. One is just south of Routes 5 & 20 on 96A, the other is just North of the main 4 corners in Ovid N.Y. The cemetery is head of schedule and the opening date is set for May 21, 2011(Armed Forces Day) time to be announced at a later date. The burial areas (7) have been leveled and new grass seed has been planted, the curbs are in and the first layer of blacktop has been laid, and the side walks are in place. The main entrance has to be finished and the old Guard shack has to be rebuild, and the outdoor committal service shelter has to be put in place. Burials will begin on the 21st of May 2011 after the Opening services, all Veterans and their spouses and in certain cases a dependent child may be buried at Sampson. The Sampson Cemetery will bury any veteran from any where that is Honorably discharged from any branch of the military. The Cemetery will provide full Honor Guard, flag and the VA will provide the head stone(White marble, half moon shape and black lettering.
