On July 11,1945, my father left my mother Dorothy, and four kids and left the Bronx,NY for boot camp at Sampson, NY. In three weeks he would be thirty and in four days I would be five. He was given an early birthday present when they bombed Heroshima, leading to the end of the war. With the invasion of Japan cancelled the Navy had no further use for him, so on October 16, 1945 he returned home, with great stories about Navy life, even though it was so short. These stories were very much a part as to why my brother Jerry and I went into the Navy in 1957. My father's name was Jeremiah J. O'Brien, and there was a guy in his company named William Bonner who came from Pittsberg. Dad died in 1964 and I was to young (24) to extract infomation from him about his days in Sampson. If anyone can give me any info about his company I would be very greatful.
Thank you,
Fred O'Brien (PH3 U S S Wasp CV-18) Veteran
