I went to Boot Camp at Sampson, NY on November 23, 1944 for my 10 weeks (as I remember it) of training to become a sailor in the United States Navy. I enlisted in Providence, RI when I was 16 in September of 1944 and was activated in November. Put on a troop train out of the Providence RR Depot in the morning and arrived at Geneva, NY late at night or early in the morning and processed. Stripped naked (put all of our clothes and possessions in individual boxes that we addressed to our homes and were sealed and shipped). Then went through a line where we got shots in both arms (same needle was used over and over again as I remember) then went through a clothing line were our uniforms were thrown at us, we got dressed in Navy work clothes, put the rest in a duffle bag, along with a hammock, then were assigned to a barracks in one of the Units. I was assigned to G (Gilmore) Unit (don't remember my company number) and we were led off to begin life as a sailor. Got lots more to tell but suffice to say, I was sent to Ordnance School, became an Aviation Ordnance Man, was assigned to CASU 37 in Monterey, California, then to an Escort Carrier (CVE 55, USS Casablanca) then to San Diego Nval Air Station CASU 5 and discharged from the Fargo Building in Boston on July 26, 1946. Would love to hear from anyone who I might have served with in any of these units. Somewhere, I have photographs of my Sampson Unit and my CASU units. If I find them will be willing to share with old shipmates. I am now 81 and thank the Lord still in good health. Hope to hear from someone. Bob Hall
