 I was a very young (age 15) Navy "boot" in 1943. Upon completion of "boot camp" I attended and graduated from the Radioman School at Sampson USS Ancon,the flagsip of the Allied Amphibeous Force Commander and was aboard the Ancon when she was part of the June 6, 1944 D-Day invasion fleet.

My unforgetable memories of Sampson were the bitter winter weather and boring liberty time in the tiny hamlet of Geneva where there was nil to occupy most of us lads with the exception of a penny arcade! Movies were gratis on base and the $50 monthly stipend Uncle Sam paid us would not go very far after deducts for savings bonds and allotments to my grandma. I understand Sampson was transfered to the Air Force after the war and it was once again used as a recruit training facility. Hope this helps. Sincerely,
