This is more specific info on how to get historical US Service records, for personnel who left the service before 1960. Although one can submit an on-line request to the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, I prefer to print out a Form 180, archives.gov/files/forms/frc/standard-form-180.pdf, send it in to the St Louis Center - page 3 of the form states the correct address. In a few weeks, the Center will send you a letter with the copying fee. You send that form back with a check and a few weeks later, you get the file via USPS. I prefer to use the print request because it allows a better explanation of the reason for the request. In SECTION III, I answer question 2: OTHER-family/genealogy/historical research. THIS FORM REALLY WORKS, even though it will take a few weeks. I have paid in the $25-50 range to get records of family members who were in the service for a few years. If you want Nimitz's or King's, could cost (alot) more. For more info, archives.gov/st-louis/order-copies.
