As a kid I was told that my Great Uncle Amin Isbir was killed in an explosion off of the Anzio Beachhead. However, I discovered recently that he is buried in the US Military Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach at Colleville-sur-Mer. He trained at the Sampson Naval Training Center in New York. Further details from a surviving Sister in Law finds that Amin was on the beach when a nearby jeep exploded. The jeep was most likely hit by German artillery, which was still in range of the beach. After the explosion, nothing was found of Amin. Although unconfirmed, his boat could also have been ferrying members of the 5th Engineers Special Brigade to Omaha Beach and got hit with a shell. His name appears on a plaque memorializing the 5th’s dead that over looks Omaha indicating that he died on June 6th during the assault. As a Coxswain, he would have been steering a landing craft of some sort. His boat more than likely brought in supplies onto the beach, or members of the 5th.
Does anyone know what really happened that day to Amin?
Your kind reply would be greatly appreciated. I have a photo of Amin at my reenactment units yahoo site... Please visit it at http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/thebloodybucket/
Thanks so much!
