You can obtain records of your Father's Service which will tell you quite a bit.

http://www.archives.gov/facilities/mo/st_louis/military_personnel_records.html

You will need to download a Standard Form 180-both front and back.
http://www.archives.gov/facilities/mo/st_louis/military_personnel_records/standard_form_180.html
The more information you have to fill in the form the better.

You then need to mail them in.
National Personnel Records Center
Military Personnel Records
9700 Page Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63132-5100

Our fax request number is 314-538-4175. The Center will respond in writing by U.S. Mail.

If I can be of further help, let me know.
