I know my father did. For $50 you can request a summary of everything in your father's Navy file from the records bureau of St Louis. In it I found that my father's promotion was after testing on 18 Oct and the raise went effect 1 November, not as he claimed. They are good stories, but you have to weed the truth from the chaff.
