I was a Pharmacist's Mate 3/c aboard the USS Pickens, APA 190 from l944 thru decommissioning in 1946, Newport News, Va. We landed Marines (5th Div) at Iwo Jima and became an auxilliary hospital ship when he last Marind debarked. We took on over 300 casualties and did not lose one life -I'm proud to say. I can only remember one ship clearly - the USS Hinsdale, APA 120, which took a kamikazee hit just aheaad of us. I do not knoe why I was on deck but I was curious as to all the planes circling around. I did not stay on deck long. The Pickens took on the Commadore and rescued others that had abandoned their ship. It is my desire to hear from anyone with any information about a former crew member, casualty or passenger on the Pickens. I too would be remiss if I didn't add my congratulations to Russ for the fantastic tribute he has paid to his father and all the veterans of WWll. You have made many families happy with your web page. Keep up the good work. God Bless and may the wind always be at your back.
