Mr. Padden: What a great website. My grandson and his family camp @ Sampson State Park. When I was a very young girl, (born in 1942) I lived directly across from Sampson. As I grew and my memory grew also, what a sight to see (by this time Sampson had become the Air Force base)those flying boxcars fly directly over our home. I and my brother would race outside just to get a glimpse of them. I was afraid they would crash into our home because they were flying so low. As I became a teenager I babysat for a couple of which the man had trained at Sampson (Navy) His name is Clarence Raes. He is still alive and lives in Geneva,NY.
Back to my grandson, I was with him at Sampson yesterday, (May 25, 2003), he just turned 16 and wanted to show me the old cemetary near the south end of Sampson. We also went to a building across the gorge from the cemetary that looked like it was used as a power plant or an incinerator. At below ground level it had 2 ovens of some kind. Would you or do you know what this bldg. was used for? It has a large smokestack. My grandson would also like to know where he could look at pictures of the base when the buildings were still there. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much. Being there yesterday brought back fond memories of the "city" across the lake. Donna Graham
