Subject: Schneider's mess
In reply to: MJF '95 's message, "Re: Loyola an attractive place for a coach?" on 18:09:22 02/19/03 Wed

I am not going to defend Tom Schneider but I would not say that Prosser cleaned up Schneider's mess. Yes, Prosser won the MAAC tourney but he also had a sub .500 MAAC regular season record (6-8) and coached the team to a home loss against Canisius in which the Hounds blew a 17 point lead.

Prosser was able to win the MAAC tourney largely due to the contributions of Schneider's recruits. I know that Bergan (an Amatucci recruit)won the tourney MVP award but Reese (Schneider recruit) deserved the award...he carried us in the quarterfinal OT win over St Peter's and played very well in the other two games. In addition Matt Gabriel (Schneider recruit) had a couple huge rebounds and an assist on a breakaway to Reese that finally broke open the St Peter's game in OT. In addition Credle and Pendleton were also Schnedier recruits who played key roles in the MAAC tourney. I assume Darius Johnson, being from Cincy was a Prosser recruit but I am unsure as to who brought Milt Williams and Julian Tait into the program.

My point is, the cupboard was not bare when Prosser arrived. It would have been interesting to see what Prosser could have done without Bergan and Reese in 95. I would have to think that he would have done no better than Ellerbe did.

Having said all of that, 1994 was magical to all of us who sat through the debacle of the prior season. My wife and I went to the MAAC tourney in '94 and that may have been the best vacation we ever had. I would have left Albany very satisfied had we only made the semis...winning the thing was unimaginable.

Sorry for this disjointed post...though I think Prosser received way too much credit for what was really a fluke weekend, I am grateful for the memories.
