Iona adds to Loyola's pain, 82-45
'Hounds cold as weather in losing 11th straight

By Bo Smolka

Like the snow outside Loyola's Reitz Arena, the losses have piled up this month for the Greyhounds.
The latest was also the most lopsided of this long season as the Greyhounds (4-22, 1-16 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) went the first 10 minutes without a field goal and dropped their 11th straight game, 82-45, to Iona last night.

Loyola was never in it, falling behind 8-1 in the first five minutes and 22-3 before Lindbergh Chatman sank the Greyhounds' first field goal with 9:28 left in the first half.

Iona (16-10, 11-6) enjoyed a size advantage inside, particularly after Loyola center Delonnie Southall picked up two quick fouls. But it was the Gaels' small, quick guards that did most of the damage early, making 5 of 7 three-pointers in the first half.

Steve Burtt Jr. (22 points) came off the bench to score 14 first-half points for Iona, shooting 3-for-3 from three-point range. He hit a pair of three-pointers 36 seconds apart that gave his team a 25-5 lead with 9:15 left in the first half.

Loyola, which hasn't won since beating Rider, 74-69, in overtime Jan. 19, failed to reach 50 points for the third straight time. It was the Greyhounds' worst defeat since a 112-68 loss at Texas in 1990.

Loyola shot 21 percent in the first half (6-for-28), with Lucious Jordan and Donovan Thomas, its two leading scorers, each going 0-for-5. Overall, the Greyhounds shot 29 percent.

"We had some open shots in the first half that just didn't fall," Loyola coach Scott Hicks said. "As we continued to struggle, the rims kept getting smaller and smaller. It's harder and harder to dig out of a hole like that when no one is playing with confidence."

Bobby Bossman (11 points) was the lone Greyhound with a hot hand in the first half, hitting 3 of 5 three-pointers and scoring nine of Loyola's 20 points.

The Gaels played like a team battling for a top seed in the upcoming MAAC tournament. They began play last night in a three-way tie for third place with Siena and Niagara.

Loyola, by contrast, looked like a team that has clinched the last-place seed in the tournament.
