I have all the student manuals EXCEPT for the OT ones - that's the one Institute class I never took. So I was right about Alexander the great. Thank you for sharing that, Kelly.

I actually had a chance to bring this up with a coworker of mine - she's Lutheran. She's been explaining stories of the OT to another (Catholic) coworker. I told her my ideas about the interpretation of the dream, and the stuff that relates to now, about the iron and clay that are mixed together but do not cling to one another, and how that might apply to us today. Actually, I wonder...given that each element is symbolic of a culture or society, if maybe the iron and the clay maybe represent the Christians (think HOLY Roman Empire - it pretty much meant the Catholic church before the reformation) and the Islamic world? Thus we live amongst each other, but our cultures, our ways of life, are as separated as the iron and clay?

That actually would help with understanding the stone cut out of the mountain, too, then...if the iron represents the Christian world, it being broken up or fragmented into so many different sects, then what we believe about the Restoration - that the true kingdom of God could not come forth from among the existing sects but had to be restored as a whole, separate, complete, entity through Joseph Smith - therefore, the stone cut from the mountain without hands. The kingdom of God is not part of the body, not derived from previous dispensations or governments or cultures or societies, but truly a separate creation or entity that stands alone.

I knew that the stone cut from the mountain without hands was interpreted to be the kingdom of God in the last days - in other words, our church - but I never understood the significance of that meaning, in relation to the rest of the dream, before. It's like fitting the other pieces of a puzzle together, and finally getting the whole picture. I love it! And how many years ago was this vision received and recorded? Hundreds of years before Christ. It existed - we have recorded history of the bible before anyone could have understood that the Roman Empire / Catholic Church was the kingdom of iron, or before they could have conceived that that kingdom would be fragmented, split apart as it has become. I just think that's so amazing, when you think about it, and truly testifies that these things are true and had to have come from God.
