...what might happen (like somebody actually dropping by).
There are actually people here in WV who still believe the Party's "October Surprise" Conspiracy Theory (1980) and that Reagan also "stole" the 1984 election. Party Doctrine that a "dunce" managed to hoodwink the mighty Workers' Party in all its 'intellectual superiority' applied then, too.
I am neither a Political Science major nor do I play one on the Net--but it seems to me if I'd just had my Ministers of the Public Enlightenment paint a candidate too slow of wit to pour it out of a boot (the draining-instructions for which were printed on the heel)--and that candidate proceeded to hand my boy his head on Election day--I would not be keen to direct the perception of the Sheeple towards my opponent's somehow superior skills in the art of Statecraft. To my untrained, unevolved mind that would make me/my political machine the one bested BY the "dunce."
Observations aside, I was one of Uncle Sam's Nephews (USN) from May 1969--August 1989. So I may have a little different perception of who Ronald Reagan was, besides the first President I actually thought of as mine. And my perception of forms of employment in which going on strike isn't an option--will most assuredly be different. The First Secretary (or whatever his title was) of PATCO told the Media there's no such thing as an illegal strike if it succeeds, but he wasn't dealing with Jimmy Carter and it was an illegal strike. He led the members of that union into the sea. All Reagan did was let the lemmings go.
From the perspective of serving in a ship that either might or might not be a target, the defining events of the Carter presidency were not reassuring. Our embassy in Pakistan burned because Islamabad had one mosque too many. Our embassy in Iran overrun because there, too, we were perceived as the Wicked Wimp of the West. We didn't have a lot of confidence in our Commander-in-Chief as one fit to lead in the war being brought to us. We'd heard mostly what our "unbiased©," "Mainstream®" Media wanted us to hear about Reagan--meaning a lot of us saw it as about a 50/50 shot he'd lead us into WW3, but the alternative wasn't a H*** of a lot more attractive.
The rest, as someone once said, is history--including that after 13 years and over $60M of taxpayers' money squandered on it, the Workers' Party finally conceded there was no evidence to support their fabled "October Surprise" theory of the 1980 election. The USSR went bust and Mr. Gorbachev now lives in California. IMHO a caller to some radio show nailed it, that if there's someone out there who could actually fill Reagan's shoes--why in H### would such a person enter politics and submit to the sort of treatment Bush has gotten since entering politics? So we may never see the like. RKBA! Regards. Nice to be typewranting again.
