Per Genesis 2:17, God said that if they ate of that tree they would die. Satan, however, knowing God's purpose, tricked Eve by saying she would NOT 'die' (Ge 3:1-7). He convinced her that her desire for the pretty fruit was more important than God's command to avoid it (v 6), although he had already hooked her with a promise that if she defied God she would become God's equal (v 5). However, soon as she and Adam did it, they knew they had messed up. Their new knowledge didn't mean power or godhood... it meant a painful loss of innocence. Satan lied.

Now, they DIDN'T actually die as God had promised they would. So Satan was 'right' about that part. I don't know whether God originally had meant spiritual death rather than physical death, or whether he just had mercy on them, but they 'lived' to tell about it. And we've all ever since wished we could return to that garden which their (our) defiance cost us.

And people today are still seeking knowledge. Some seek it to better serve the Lord, but some still seek it to become His equal.

In faith, Dave
