Sorry,
I didn't mean for it to sound like a threat to anyone. If it came out that way, and you are threatened by the prospect of being below an acceptable level of play, then practice. There are many of us in the band (myself included, at times) who are not putting into their playing what they're getting out of it. That is always evident on the contest field.
Leading the 69th, Marching in "Tunes of Glory", and other top flight gigs have very little to do with how good we are as players. If it weren't for competition, none of us would be playing with a purpose. For me, competition gives a sense of purpose to my playing. That's why bands that only do parades never seem to get better.
Everyone wants to play better. No one thinks: "Boy, I sure wish I were worse at this". Instead, we all want to get better. "I wanna get better"....."My mamma wants to fly jets...." you get the idea.
It's not want you want....it never is. It's what are you willing to work for? I'm not asking for an hour a day. I don't do that. I'm asking for 30 minutes twice a week (besides band practice). I think that minimal commitment will pay handsome rewards this summer. Otherwise, we'll be in for quite a long summer.
No, it wasn't a threat. I'm just trying not to embarrass myself out there.
