Subject: Found a Pit Bull, please help!

Yesterday was given the option of adopting a stray pup full of fleas with a ratty looking collar but no tag. He isn't very old - probably a couple of months, lovely temperament, a very sweet, loveable, friendly pup. Now, I know nothing about dogs - assumed he was some kind of mutt. Made an appointment to see the vet on Monday, found the name of an excellent trainer. Went to Petco to buy essentials for him, spoke to the manager there who informed me I have an American Pit Bull terrier. Initially, I was concerned that I'd inadvertantly stolen someone's extremely valuable dog, until I reminded myself of the condition he was in, not to mention his tender age. I am willing and able to keep him, however, I'm concerned that he may be of a poor breed and that I might have a problem dog on my hands. Will a vet be able to reassure me on this, or is there no way to tell whether this is a safe dog or not? I have to say, my intuition tells me this is a good animal,he is a sweetheart, but what do I know?!! I have 5 year old daughter, too. Thanks.
