Bobbi: A good starting point would be Richard Stratton's books on American Pit Bull Terriers (APBT's). He gives the history of the breed and the differences between APBT's, American Staffordshire (Amstaff's) and Staffordshire Terriers (Staffies). Unfortunately, anything that looks remotely like an APBT gets called as a "Pit Bull".
There are a number of other books and organizations that can help you learn about the breed. Check your local bookstores or do internet searches for titles and websites. Don't buy into the bs that says all pits are vicious, fighters, biters or mean. The love from a pit is unequaled. You do have to be aware of the potential for problems, the same as with any breed. Know your dog (or your m-law's dog) and enjoy the moments you have together. In memory of "Sadie" my spouse's first, but won't be the last, APBT 8-18-93 to 9-24-05.
