Carley, you should have your pup checked by a vet to rule out any physical problems that may be causing him to behave this way. Dogs can't tell us when something's wrong and sometimes the only way they can let us know is by acting out or differently in ways that may scare us. By swating him for doing something wrong, your husband just reinforced fear. Could your daughter have done something to cause the pup to growl (get too close to his toy/treat, startle him...?) Sometimes my Pits will growl at me, but it's not in an aggressive manner, it's more of a sassy way that they communicate to me. Is he neutered? (Unaltered male dogs account for the majority if dog bites/attacks.) If he is cleared of any health problems by the vet, then your next step would be to have him evaluated by a behaviorist. Where did you get this pup? If you bought from a breeder, did you get to see and interact with the parents? What was their behavior like? Unfortunately animal aggression is a Pit Bull trait so once this boy turns about 2 years old, you should always keep him and the Rat Terrier separated when no one is around to supervise. Pits can get along with other dogs, mine do, they just need extra supervision around each other once they reach maturity. If a behaviorist evaluates him and finds that he isn't a suitable pet, then you will have to euthanize him. Giving him away will only be passing the problem on to someone else and potentialy causing risk for another family or person. Of he'll just end up chained outside for the rest of his miserable life or worse. I hope this helps and you're able to work though this problem.

Beckie, your problem is a little more simple. You just need to keep your Pit separated from the other dogs and if they aren't already, have everyone neutered/spayed, this will reduce territorial aggression caused by those raging hormones. You don't have to worry that your Pit will attack the kids just because he attacked your dog. What I do in my multiple dog/multiple Pit Bull household is "crate and rotate". This keeps the dogs safe from each other and you can give each dog their own one-on-one time with you. Here are some links that should help:
