As a responsible pit bull owner and educated member of the society I feel that I have a wealth of knowledge to offer on the subject of the true nature of Pit Bulls....
I beleive that what we need to implement in order to protect both innocent citizens and Pit Bull owners alike, is a form of legislation that holds the owners of the Pit Bulls responsible for the behaviour of their dogs.
I beleive that dogs that have violent histories, or that are likely to behave aggressively when outside of their homes or yards should be required to wear muzzles when outside of their domains.
However, by dogs I mean any and all breeds with histories of agression towards both humans and other animals.
To isolate one breed alone, simply because of the strength of their jaws, would be a mistake.
Depending on how they are raised, any Pit Bull can be as gentle as a kitten or as vicious as a lion.
Their best quality is also their greatest downfall...loyalty to their family. Any dog will protect their family with every ounce of strength in their being.
I have recently lost one of my Pit Bulls due to the stigma that police have placed on the breed.
A drugged up psychopath entered my home and immeditely began to fight with a friend who had been visiting me...my dog (Zeuss), a three year old male Pit Bull did not take kindly to this uninvited lunatic attacking my friend and before I was able to ger him (Zeuss) locked into his kennel so that he would not intervene, he got in between the psycho and my friend and grabbed the aggressor by the arm and would not let go.
A melee ensued, the police were called and thankfully Zeuss let go of the agressor before the police arrived or he would have been shot for protecting his home.
I explained the situation to the police when they arrived, in a useless plea for his life, but they were unsympathetic to my situation. They took my dog away (in the Humane Society van) with every intent to have him destroyed that night, which they did.
This was the first and only instance of Zeuss biting a person and the police were unwilling to give him a second chance. They did not care one bit that he had been protecting his home when the attack occured, or that the aggressor had been as high as a kite on methamphetamine....all that mattered to them was that a Pit Bull had bitten someone and that they were made to look like the heroes.
My dog was like my son, and now he is gone forever....Why? Because he was a Pit Bull with a heart like a lion who protected his home and everyone in it with every ounce of his being.
It is in Zeuss' memory that I have sworn to save his breed from wrongfull eradication based on misinformation and hatred of something that is misunderstood.
I beleive that all aggressive dogs should be muzzled when they are outside, all aggressive breeds should be monitored and that the owners should be made liable (through fines and/or jail time) for the actions of their dogs.
All a breeding ban is going to accomplish is to raise the value of the dogs on the black market.
Did prohibition prevent alcohol from being consumed and sold? All it did was up the value of booze on the black market and gave the mob more power over the common man.
