You definitely don't want to spank or hit him, that can make things worse. Don't use the crate as a place of punishment or he'll associate it as a bad place. You may have just startled him while he was sleeping. Or he could be possesive of his space on the couch, kinda like some dogs are possesive of food or toys. Have him checked by a vet to make sure it isn't something medical making him cranky like an inner ear infection. If he is clear of any medical problems then contact a trainer/behaviorist to be evaluated. Don't take his actions personally. If you lose trust in him he'll sense that and won't trust you which will create more problems. If this problem progresses the last thing you want to do is give him to someone else. You won't be getting rid of the problem, just giving it to someone else who might not handle it in a humane manner.
