Subject: My little town blues.......

A typhoon hit Tokyo on Tuesday morning, 11 September 2001, a date with no historical significance – then.

After the typhoon, the sunset was breathtakingly beautiful. The clouds were blazingly orange, as if the sky was on fire. I went home a little bit earlier than usual (yes, we had to work on typhoon days as there are no typhoon signals in Japan. You guys in HK are lucky) and was back at 9pm. I started to cook my meal, wash my clothes, and switched on the TV for the final episode of Faye Wong Japanese drama.

Things were normal until about 10pm, when the news interrupted the drama: WTC in NY was hit by a plane. I watched, gee, what an accident.

Just a few minutes later, the whole world knew what happened. It was so incredible and frightening that several airliners were used as missiles, and the WTC collapsed. (the attack of the Pentagon was not a surprise to me)

The first thing on my mind was whether my friends in NY were OK. I contacted them all and so far they are all OK – one did witness the collapsed of the North Tower. Many of them stayed at home this week (One has not forgotten his sense of humor. He works at the Bronx Zoo. He told me only essential and important people needed to report duty. Since he does not feed any animals, he is not essential.) One other, living in Washington DC, said her country had changed forever.

It is too early to say forever, but the day is really a turning point in history, comparable to, or probably worse than, the attack of Pearl Harbor.

USA has no choice but war. No country can stand such an attack. It will be a big one, and I believe it will be long. I'm afraid eventually the West (USA and her allies) will find them have to face more or less the whole Islamic world. It will be unlike the Gulf War 10 years ago, when some Islamic countries joined the war against Iraq. And then the target was a country the war could be comparatively short. Now the West is fighting an ideology. It is not going to be easy.

Bin Laden and other Moslem fanatics are of course the culprits – but they BELIEVE they are doing the right thing. The whole plot has been so well-planned and calculated. They knew what they were doing. They were not crazy.

Israel, and all those who have been brainwashed to believe that Jews are the chosen people and Israel the promised land, are partly to be blamed. I know many of my Christian classmates will not agree, but this is the core of the problem.

Anyway, glad to know my Pui Ching classmates are all OK.
