Subject: Back from the (former) USSR

Just come back to Tokyo yesterday afternoon (and greeted by the first typhoon of this year).
This is my fourth visit to Russia. I like the country, although it is not in a good shape, and it can be quite dangerous in some spots after dark. Russians are a bit cole in the face but warm at heart. What is more important is that they are mostly honest. I like Russia since my first visit in 1992.
I attended a conference on conservation of Oriental Stork in Eastern Asia. Like 8 years ago, I was deeply involved in plans to bring all countries in North East Asia together.
We did one very funny thing: we (Russian, Amricans, Japanese and Chinese) celebrated the 4 of July at Komsomolsk, one of the Gulag cities. In the evening I usually joined the Russians in their singing party, if I was not in a meeting. I was happy to help the Chinese to get their message across to the Russians, Americans or Japanese, but I usually stayed away from those Chinese drinking parties.
Will be in America very soon.
