Subject: What kind of cactus is this?

My mum had a few cacti grown in her backyard (She couldn't remember what it was called. She is 87 years old). I was a little suspicious when she told me it was a cactus because it looks nothing like the typical cactus I know, until I came across a photo from the website which links me to this forum:

The photo I refered to was on the extreme left on the bottom of the webpage that looks more like a flower than a cactus. Please tell me the common name of this cactus and is it an Australian native?

Thanks in advance

Francis
