Subject: From what I understand, there are at least six different suggested models. Of course, you have to know that money is a key issue in the rebuilding. Not the only issue, but a very important one. I'll see if I can locate more info. on the proposals.

ARCHITECT OPENS UP
ON WTC

ELI Attia, the architect of the black-glass office tower at 101 Park Ave. that was the setting for "Gremlins II" and other movies, is launching a crusade to dump the World Trade Center site proposals in favor of a nationwide "open" competition.
"If allowed to stand, the decisions made to date around the rebuilding of Ground Zero will doom it forever to what verges on a national disgrace," Attia rages.

"The Lower Manhattan Development Corp. and the Port Authority have already failed the nation in its expectation for a unique, uplifting and visionary project to rise from the ashes . . . what should become a new wonder of the world is emerging as just another speculative real estate development."

Attia says the rules established by the PA and LMDC "have eliminated from consideration every creative architect in America." So he has started a petition to launch an open competition. He's already gathered more than 5,000 signatures through his Web site, www.phoenixUSA.org.

The influential American Institute of Architects, whose 70,000 members include Richard Meier and Peter Eisenman, say they support Attia's initiative. Terence Riley, the Museum of Modern Art's chief curator for architecture and design, and Horace Havermeyer II, publisher of architecture and design bible Metropolis magazine, have also joined the cause.

Attia declares: "We cannot let Ground Zero be designed by bureaucrats while our enormous national design talent is ignored. Only the participation of the greatest architectural minds, selected through a national open design competition, will allow us to rebuild the World Trade Center in the best way possible.

"We must act now to make the site a lasting and fitting tribute to 9/11 and its victims instead of spending billions of public dollars on a mundane project that will stand at Ground Zero for generations to regret."

Downtown officials have said they may slow down their planning schedule for the WTC site in the wake of stinging criticism of the six too-similar design proposals unveiled last week, and may scrap them altogether.

[> [> [> Interesting and I think I agree with what this guy is saying, but he doesn't really give me any factual info on WHY the current plans are "verging on a national disgrace". One COULD read his words and think "sour grapes" by a guy that didn't make the cut. -- ladyday, 08:46:07 07/24/02 Wed

[> [> [> [> You know, I agree that this architect wasn't invited to the party, and he's a bit miffed. I was trying to find something that explained the objection that some had to the rebuilding efforts. What I do understand is that many people don't want the financial and the commercial to overshadow the memorial for those who were lost on 9-11. -- Lafaux, 13:07:17 07/24/02 Wed

[> [> [> Well I have to admit I am worried about commercialism overshadowing the site as well. The WTC is like the Titanic, it should be left to rest in peace. There are still unfound people there and in a sense that is their resting place. I want something that is a tribute, but not a place where people will just go in and get coffee and do business like nothing has happened there. I have only been to Ground zero once and I know whatever is erected there, it will b ehard for me to enter there again. Thank you so much for posting the article Linda. -- Kammgirl, 15:59:27 07/24/02 Wed

[> [> [> [> ITA 100% with that Kammi. I can't even imagine who would want to go to work in a building (no matter who the architect) that stood on the site of the WTC. I mean would people convert Columbine High School into a dance hall? -- ladyday, 17:42:45 07/24/02 Wed
