Subject: SALES OF IVERSON GARB SHOOT UP SINCE ARREST

He’s so bad, it’s good for business.
Basketball bad boy Allen Iverson’s recent run-in with the law has been a boon for sales of his line of Reebok athletic shoes and apparel.

"It seems like there’s been a big spike in sales," said Mitchell Modell, president of Modell’s Sporting Goods. "We definitely see an increase" in sales of the $40 Iverson jerseys and shoes, which cost about $100.

"The customers are supporting and rallying around him," said Modell, whose company has 56 stores in the New York area and 22 in Philadelphia.

"Any time there are special events, like playoffs, it always generates sales," he said, adding, "We’d rather not sell merchandise based on what happened. We’d rather see another playoff."

Iverson pleaded not guilty earlier this month to 14 charges including assault, false imprisonment and making terroristic threats after he and his uncle allegedly barged into the apartment of a cousin looking for his wife. Cops said the Philadelphia 76ers guard was carrying a gun.

The charges also have not kept the Foot Locker chain from ringing up brisk sales of Iverson merchandise.

"Sales have gone up at Foot Locker," said John Shanley, retail analyst at Wells Fargo Securities, who covers the athletic shoe and apparel retailer.

"The Foot Locker people have told me they could have sold a heck of a lot more" if they had it in stock.

But a source at the NBA Store on Fifth Avenue said there has not been an increase in sales of Iverson merchandise.

"Allen Iverson has always been one of our top-selling NBA players and continues to be," the source said.

Customers at the NBA Store were mixed in their support of Iverson.

"He may be the bad boy of the NBA, but he’s also the poster boy," said Ralphy Lugo, who was wearing an Iverson jersey.

"I’m from Philly, so I’ve gotta represent. I’m always going to wear his jersey."

The bottom line, though, is the relationship between Iverson and Reebok, who last year signed the NBA star to a lifetime contract extension.

"Allen Iverson’s appeal and popularity is based on his bad-boy street image," said Dean Bonham, president of Bonham Group, a sports marketing operation in Denver.

"Corporate America responds to the bottom line, whether or not they’re in concert with Iverson’s actions," he said. "If more merchandise is sold, it’s more difficult for a company to say the rub-off is damaging."

Iverson is free on $10,000 bond.

[> LOL! Just this Saturday my brother was talking about buying my baby nephew some baby Iversons. His reasons, because he's certainly not the biggest Iverson fan in the world, "the man" has totally blown Iversons' misdeeds out of proportion. I agree there are probably a multitude of inflated charges against Iverson, but my baby ain't wearing his shoes regardless. -- b, 13:06:18 07/23/02 Tue

[> [> Er... Just how much might a baby pair of Iverson's cost? About those charges... -- Lafaux, 17:19:29 07/23/02 Tue

You know what I think should happen to Iverson for spousal abuse alone. He should be locked up with a very perverted and very powerful bunk buddy. Let him get slapped around a bit.

[> [> [> [> That's what my brother says, but I got $50 on probation and/or community service. What I think he should get - probably some counseling and make him do a PSA or something. Jason Kidd had a domestic situation 2 years ago but since he was in Phoenix, there wasn't this circus atmosphere. BTW the baby Iversons are only $35. I'm just gonna buy baby Jordans before he gets the Iversons, can't turn down free shoes from aunt b. -- b, 19:39:19 07/23/02 Tue
