Subject: Arnold Schwarzenegger To Enter The Political Arena?

Arnold Schwarzenegger, who turns 55 next Tuesday, is assaulting middle age with all his brawn.
The action star has fired his movie agents and, it's said, is working with a seasoned political consultant on a bid to become the governor of California.

On Friday, Arnold said "hasta la vista" to the William Morris Agency, which had represented him for the last five years. Arnold's handlers there had helped him bench-press a staggering $30 million for the latest "Terminator" movie. But Schwarzenegger apparently blamed the agency for failing to land him enough roles outside the action genre, where his bankability has been slipping.

Schwarzenegger's spokeswoman, Jill Eisenstadt, denies he's unhappy.

"He's not angry at William Morris," she insisted, saying that the agency will continue to rep him on speaking and commercial deals.

The William Morris Agency had no immediate comment.

Meanwhile, Schwarzenegger, who strategically mapped his ascent from bodybuilder to box- office colossus - marrying into the Kennedy family along the way - seems to be getting more serious about a 2006 gubernatorial bid.

The actor had talked about a run against the incumbent, Democrat Gray Davis, this year, only to back away, citing movie commitments.

But he has been huddling with Dresner, Wickers & Associates, GOP consultants. A Republican activist tells U.S. News and World Report: "It's the clearest sign yet The Terminator is running."

Spokeswoman Eisenstadt confirms to us that Richard Dresner is advising Schwazenneger, but only to help him pass the Arnold-backed Proposition 49, which would fund afterschool programs in California.

During the recent National Governors Association convention, several GOP pols also promised to help Schwarzenegger, who has said he would rather devote himself to child-care issues than go "down another red carpet to do a movie premiere."

"Arnold is focusing his energy on this initiative," says Eisenstadt. "Anything else remains to be seen."
