I think we're all aware of the mortality of our way of life. I don't know if it's patriotism or just fear. BTW, nothing wrong with being afraid, we'd be fools NOT to be, but I'm just not sure if it's patriotism.

[> [> I Think It's A New Appreciation Of What We Have -- SkinTheKat, 22:47:45 03/05/02 Tue

Yes, we gripe about the incompetents in office, but look at how some of these other countries are run. And we chafe at what we perceive as infringements on our personal freedome, but when was the last time you saw someone in a black turban beating on crowds over here?

Not that we don't have a long way to go. But I think that obsessing and nit-picking over the details was contributing to a lot of unnecessary hostility among various American groups.

It may not be perfect, by a long shot, for anyone who ISN'T a large fish in this country, but there are a lot of basic freedoms we have taken for granted. I'd rather be the poorest person living in THIS country than living in Afghanistan or some of these OTHER hellholes.

[> [> [> IMO yes, the United States has stood together and strong through this ordeal. With 09/11, we realized that we are not invulnerable and that we could easily be destroyed. In fact we were destroyed. People from everywhere have comforted myself and my family and I believe we now realize that although we have our problems, we still enjoy so many freedoms that other countries can only dream of. I will never forget how NY and the country have pulled together and I truly hope that it lasts and we can end hatred. American sare proud and we are courageous and most of all we do not hide in caves. -- Kammgirl, 04:24:34 03/06/02 Wed

[> [> [> I agree, Lafaux. It's not just who has the biggest suv anymore. It's who has the biggest suv with the biggest flag on it:) OTOH, I've seen many interviews with young men who have inlisted since Sept. 11 and most of them stole my heart with what they had to say about why they were inlisting. I hope this administration doesn't screw them over. -- Tf, 13:26:43 03/09/02 Sat

The flags give you comfort. That's something that I forgot. They should be a tribute to all those who perished.
Honestly, I love this country but I think it's good to keep any administration on their toes by being informed......... Last Tuesday when I went to vote, I was the only one in the building besides the people in charge of the ballots. There was really low voter turnout in my city. It's these things that makes me question our true understanding of patriotism. I also feel that some think in terms of 'blind patriotism'(I'm not very articulate, so I hope this makes sense.), like blind faith. I have to question. This country has done some wonderful things, but also some horrible things that tend to get swept under the rug at times like this. We need to rally together but we also need to know we're not a superior people just because we reside in US borders...............But Kammi, I will never question the heroism, bravery and patriotism of your brother. He and people like him give me hope for the human race.

[> [> [> [> [> [> TF your comments do not sound insensitive at all and I thank you so much for your kind words and I agree. I have been to many different countries and I have seen what the US has done and honestly much of what we have done in the name of freedom makes me sick. I do not want innocent people to suffer and I do not hate the Afgani people. I hate what those in power do and that they have control over our lives. There needs to be major changes. In this great nation, a place like Appalachia should never exist. In this great nation, everyone should have a home. -- Kammgirl, 14:11:43 03/11/02 Mon
