Wilhite caught after chase dressed as woman in wig

It took an alert motorist and a high-speed chase to finally arrest a Fort Payne man wanted for robbery and a whole lot more.
According to a press release from Fort Payne acting Police chief David Walker, Benjamin Anthony Wilhite, 42 of Fort Payne, sits in the DeKalb County Jail today facing charges for reckless driving, DUI, fleeing or attempting to elude police and on a warrant for a parole violation from a charge of first-degree kidnapping.
He is also being held on a warrant for first-degree stolen property and first-degree armed robbery.
Wilhite, who allegedly robbed Pit Stop on Godfrey Avenue in Fort Payne while dressed as a woman wearing a red wig armed with a hand gun, was dressed as a woman wearing a red wig when he was finally taken into custody.
The chase began about 11:30 p.m. on Thursday when a motorist reported a green van as a possible DUI. According to Walker, state troopers saw the van in Etowah County on Highway 11 and recognized it as the van Fort Payne police had reported as wanted in connection with the robbery and allegedly stolen in Dade County (Ga.) on March 21.
A high-speed chase followed about 1 mile south of Collinsville where spikes were laid out and flattened the van's tires.
The chase didn't end there.
Wilhite, dressed as a woman in a wig, took off on foot, but was taken into custody a short time later.
According to the release, more women's clothing and another red wig was found in the van.
According to police, the Pit Stop store clerk picked Wilhite out of a photo lineup and the robbery warrant was issued.
Wilhite allegedly entered the store dressed as a woman in a red wig with a gun and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
According to the press release, Wilhite also has warrants in Dade County (Ga.).
