Madison group
hosts teen dance

HUNTSVILLE -- A Madison County group dedicated to providing a nurturing, activity-filled atmosphere for teen-agers is sponsoring a New Year's Eve dance at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

The doors open at 9 p.m. and close a 3 a.m. Admission is $5 per person and there will be affordable refreshments for sale.

The first 100 guests will receive a soft drink and a T-shirt. Doormen will require identification to ensure that they admit no one older than 19.

"We figured if they started at 9, they wouldn't have time to go anywhere else to party, and if we end it at 3 they won't have time to go anywhere else," said Jane Dow, president of the Madison Community Action Team.

Co-hosts are the New Millennium Youth Council, "Neverland" and the Madison Chamber of Commerce Youth Council. Live bands include "Cryptozoo," "Lesser Mind," "Scorpads" and "Kick Liquid."

The purpose of the party, titled "Neverland in Space," is twofold, she said. Organizers want to provide a safe, affordable New Year's Eve alternative for young people ages 13 to 19. They also want to demonstrate the magnitude of events they are capable of sponsoring so donors will support a regional youth center.

The Internal Revenue Service recently declared MCAT a non-profit agency. The group's organizers are looking for donations to build a 10,000-square-foot youth center. The site has not been determined, but Mrs. Dow said it will cost $1.25 million.

For information about donating to MCAT, call Mrs. Dow at 256-461-8181.
