Any sprinter wants a teammate near him in the final kilometers, even those that prefer to win from their opponents' wheels. There are dozens of reasons why this is useful, and you can ask a sprinter if you do not believe me.

The average situation is a situation that never actually arises, just like the average person doesn't exist. A smart team accounts for contingencies and doesn't leave its sprinter alone in a group of almost 80. Rabobank are not stupid. I think.
