Do you have a link to that picture?
Simpson and Merckx both rode for Peugeot - so maybe it was not "compassion" but team orders LOL!
Then again Merckx definately didn't ride to team orders in the 1967 Paris Nice - but his duel with team leader Simpson did produce some stunning racing -
I have a few photos of that race and will try to scan them into the computer when i have time
