There's a great picture of Merckx offering a bloodied Tom Simpson a water bottle after he'd obviously crashed but gotten up to continue. Even the "Cannibal" had some compassion. Plenty of people who wear the yellow bands understand that it is about remembering to do something to help fight a terrible affliction, not about being a "Lance Fan." And of course, for some it is fashion. Remember Swatches?! And jelly bracelets!
