GENERAL COURSE OUTLINE FOR THE ADULT ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSE
Instructor: Mr. Christopher Rathburn
Objective: To provide an environment that will facilitate the student's ability to comprehend and speak English through guided conversation practice and to allow the student to explore some of the differences in culture between Eastern and Western civilization.
Emphasis: Conversational English in its modern form with initial attention paid to survival "street" English. (Basic to intermediate Business English may also be provided at the student's request).
Materials: Interchange , will be the text utilized as our basic guideline. Supplementary materials such as hand-outs, photocopies taken from other text books, and any materials the director deems pertinent may also be used.
Your Instructor: Mr. Christopher Mark Rathburn is a citizen of the United States of America, most recently residing in the state of Florida. Originally from Buffalo, New York (near the Canadian border) Mr. Rathburn's speech is without regional accent.
Mr. Rathburn is a graduate of The University of South Florida where he majored in International Relations with a minor in History receiving honors including the Dean's List of Scholars, Member-elect Golden Key National Honor Society, and The Honors Convocation in Recognition of Superior Academic Achievement.
Before coming to Taiwan, Mr. Rathburn was in an apprenticeship program in Wuppertal, Germany at Vok Dams Gruppe, the second largest event-marketing firm in Germany. In this capacity he handled the English correspondence for Vok Dams Gruppe and wrote the English text for their subsidiary Compucoach's, web-site.
During this time, Mr. Rathburn tutored five German nationals in the English language (contact information furnished upon request).
Mr. Rathburn has taught adults in Ta-Chia, Changhua and Ping tong, Taiwan.

(Note: This syllabus is subject to minor changes when and if the Director and Instructor both deem it would be in the student's best interest to modify, complement, augment or otherwise alter this plan of events.)
The subjects listed below will be covered in differing amounts of time, taking into consideration the level of proficiency displayed by the students, relevance, and general student interest).
1. Personal Introductions:
On our first meeting we will get to know one another through open discussion. I will tell you about myself and hope you will do the same for me. I will field any questions you may have at this time. This session also will allow me to ascertain the level of your fluency.
2. Going Places:
Travel oriented topics, such as airports, train stations, customs, car rentals, taxi cabs and hotels.
3. Money:
Budgets, buying, cash, credit cards and banking.
4. Fashion:
Clothing vocabulary, current styles and cultural differences.
5. Sports:
General vocabulary, cultural role and "small talk".
6. Food and Drink:
Vocabulary, restaurants, tipping and cultural differences.
7. Health and Beauty:
Exercise, bathroom supplies and make-up.
8. Shopping:
Stores, sales, check-out, flea-markets and differences in shopping.
9. Everyday Life:
Household vocabulary and general daily events.
10. Emergencies:
Fire, ambulances, 911, police and helpful tips on crime.
11. Music:
Blues, jazz, rock-n-roll, rap, country, and their cultural differences.
12. Socializing:
Friendship, get-togethers, parties, and other social topics.
13. Automobiles (cars):
Vocabulary, traffic, driving, laws and some guidelines.
14. Work:
The workplace, professions and their duties.
15. At Home:
Apartments, houses, living arrangements, and local differences.
16. Holidays:
Customs, traditions, history and their dates.
17. Schools and Universities:
Vocabulary and cultural differences.
18. Earth matters:
Ecology and some U.S./ European geography.
