Subject: The Best of S13

I've just finished looking at all S13 episodes. I think this is a very strong season. My favorite episodes in order: 'A Place to Hide;' 'He Was Only Seven;' 'Saddle Stiff;' 'Cassie' and 'A Home for Jamie.' Misfires: 'Don't Cry, My Son' & 'Frenzy.' I think the plot is backwards in 'Don't Cry, My Son.' It should be a woman kidnapping another woman's child, not a man kidnapping a woman's child...and Landon did correct this in the Little House episode where a woman who lost her baby steals Laura's daughter Rose. 'Frenzy' is just too repetitive; how many times does Ben have to tell the woman and her son to hide from big bad crazy papa? I was glad when that episode was finally over, though I think Kathleen Widdoes is a fine actress.

"The Saddle Stiff" is one of the best episodes ever imo. I also love "The Lonely Man." Other faves: "The Grand Swing," "Face of Fear," "Blind Hunch," "Customs of the Country," "Search in Limbo," "He Was Only Seven" and "The Younger Brother's Younger Brother."

Yes, a very strong season!

I forgot about 'Blind Hunch.' Thanks for mentioning it. Rip Torn is excellent in that episode. I think the reason 'Saddle Stiff' works so well, at least for me, is because it revisits the character of Ben. He's on the other side of middle age, and along comes this guy (Buddy Ebsen) who challenges his sense of self-worth. It's a beautifully written and performed episode. I really like the scene where Ben looks in the mirror and decides to prove Ebsen's character wrong about him getting all soft. And there is a lot of irony when, posing as Ben Brown, the other men bash the Cartwrights and he has to sort of just suck it up and take it. It really is a brilliant episode. I do not like 'Customs of the Country.' I think it is very unrealistic that not one of the Mexican characters speak Spanish. Even Hop Sing doesn't speak entirely in English, so why do these characters? Plus, as happens with some episodes of Bonanza, stereotypes once again abound.

Landon used many themes or story lines from Bonanza in LHOTP.

He sure did. In many ways, he was not playing Charles Ingalls, as much as he was doing a continuation of Joe as a family man.
