"The Saddle Stiff" is one of the best episodes ever imo. I also love "The Lonely Man." Other faves: "The Grand Swing," "Face of Fear," "Blind Hunch," "Customs of the Country," "Search in Limbo," "He Was Only Seven" and "The Younger Brother's Younger Brother."

Yes, a very strong season!

I forgot about 'Blind Hunch.' Thanks for mentioning it. Rip Torn is excellent in that episode. I think the reason 'Saddle Stiff' works so well, at least for me, is because it revisits the character of Ben. He's on the other side of middle age, and along comes this guy (Buddy Ebsen) who challenges his sense of self-worth. It's a beautifully written and performed episode. I really like the scene where Ben looks in the mirror and decides to prove Ebsen's character wrong about him getting all soft. And there is a lot of irony when, posing as Ben Brown, the other men bash the Cartwrights and he has to sort of just suck it up and take it. It really is a brilliant episode. I do not like 'Customs of the Country.' I think it is very unrealistic that not one of the Mexican characters speak Spanish. Even Hop Sing doesn't speak entirely in English, so why do these characters? Plus, as happens with some episodes of Bonanza, stereotypes once again abound.
