Subject: Auction of Lorne Greene items

Word is that many of Big Daddy Lorne Greene's personal possessions go on the auction block as per the wishes of his son, Chuck Greene. There will be lots of stuff -- jewelry, rugs, memorabilia and such. Auction's in Reno this weekend and here's the web site to get in on the action if you can't get to Reno:

You beat me to it , Pete. Here is a blurb a local TV station put out on Facebook. Am I the only one that does NOT remember seeing a branding iron in the opening scenes of the burning map of Bonanza?

I looked through the pictures, and these look like personal items of Lorne Greene's (and his wife's, unless he wore earrings) and really nothing associated with Bonanza, unless you consider some awards and promotional games. Perhaps not all the items were photographed?

I saw the belt buckle in the auction pictures, but still no picture of that mysterious branding iron...

I bought some of the Judaica items, including a Tanach which was inscribed from Lorne's mother to him.

I also got a Chanukiah, some ewers and an oil lamp.

One item I bought the auction house didn't even realize the correct name for. It was in their opinion, a pointer. I gave them the correct term and they even googled it! The correct term is "Yad".

They might mean the branding iron in the shape of the Chevrolet insignia, as Chevy sponsored Bonanza. It was seen either before or after the actual opening credits. I don't know which seasons it was used, or how often.

In this clip the branding iron is seen prior to the opening credits. The episode is "The Deed and the Dilemma" from season eight.

Thanks, Tim. I was pretty young when Bonanza was in its original run, so I can't say I remember the Chevy brand, but it does look familiar. I know I remember seeing the burning map as a kid; it was a very striking image. I never would have believed in a million years I'd be living on the Ponderosa one day.

Come to think of it, what was the significance of the burning map, if any?

Yer welcome I'm sure, flynn m'boy. Best o'luck to ye.

The Chevy Branding Iron was in the fire for pretty near every episode sponsored by Chevrolet, so that's ten years (1961 to 1971). You folks who have the official DVDs from CBS Paramount (and I presume that's pretty near all of us) can see the iron brand the Ponderosa Map and hear the announcer announce, "Chevrolet presents . . . BOW - NAN - ZA! on some eps in the season 3 and beyond sets.

It's a pretty safe bet the earrings belonged to the missus. The patriarch of the Ponderosa a prissy? Please.

Oh, not Hop Sing either! :-) Some of the jewelry was identified as belonging to "Mrs. Lorne Greene."

I have not purchased the 3rd season yet! Just one and two.

Does anyone know how much the belt buckle sold for?

Also, there are several books from the auction that have now been put up for sale on Ebay if you want to take a look. Most priced around $15.
