Subject: Bonanza seasons 9-14 on German DVD?

Can anyone tell me what happened to seasons 9-14 in Germany? They are no longer at Amazon's German site.

Hi Annie, I ordered these sets from Amazon.de when they were released a few years back (I also grabbed Season 8 long before CBS Video put it out), so I had a quick look and they are still available. Here is the link (scroll towards the bottom of the page for the later seasons).

http://www.amazon.de/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&url=search-alias%3Ddvd&field-keywords=Bonanza

For those of you who may not be familiar with the German DVDs, the episodes are complete and uncut. They are put out by StudioCanal, a huge French-based production and distribution company. They are well known throughout Europe, and they put out a professional product. In other words, you don't have to worry that you're buying a half-baked bootleg job that some guy cooked up in his basement.

Despite the fact that they are produced for the German market, they do contain a language option which will allow you to watch the episodes with the original US soundtracks (actors' voices and original music scores) intact. German is the only other language option. Surprisingly, there's no French audio.

The quality of sound and image are of course nowhere near the superb treatment (remastered using the original elements) that CBS Video has given the series on their DVDs of Seasons 1-8. StudioCanal's image is bland and the colors are not vibrant. There are artifacts apparent here and there on the images. The audio is in mono only. And there are no Special Features.

Last but not least, you will need a Region-Free DVD or Blu-ray player (easily obtainable in the US), as the German DVDs (Region 2) will not play on players designed and sold to the US market (Region 1). Forgive me if I'm boring with too much detail that might seem obvious, but just trying to cover all the bases.

As we all know, there is no guarantee that CBS Video will put together and release Seasons 9-14. Given that, the StudioCanal German DVDs are at least, well, there. And they can be used to ensure that you have all of the episodes of the series complete and uncut. That's why I took a flyer on them. Just an insurance policy so that I know I have the complete series, and of course we also have no way of knowing how long these German sets will remain available.

I sincerely hope that CBS Video will finish the job and render the StudioCanal sets a nice little oddity for the collectibles archive.

Thanks for the information. On the season 14 DVD set, is Forever in two parts or the feature length version? Are the scenes that NBC cut from the episode... back on the DVD?

In the first half, there are scenes of Joe building the house that NBC cut. In the second half there are scenes of the house after it burns down... that include Clem investigating the cause of the fire. Later Clem rides out to the burned out shell of Joe's house and he and Ben have a conversation about the fire and Alice's brother. More scenes follow inside the Ponderosa with the doctor. Joe's hands got bandaged because they got burned in the fire. The doctor gives Joe a sedative to calm him down and he takes it downstairs so Joe won't try to overdose on it and he and Ben discuss things.

Hi Annie, I will have to go back and look at that. I can't recall if Forever is shown in two parts. As for the scenes you describe, I will definitely have to check that out as well. But that's great, because it will give me a chance to watch the episode again!

Give me a couple of days and I will let you know.

Larry
