Gunsmoke (1955-1975) ran for twenty seasons on CBS.

There are many of the early half-hour episodes that I haven't seen in a long time. One favorite is "How to Kill a Woman" from season three, with Pernell Roberts as a badman named Nat Pilcher.

The one-hour black and white era, season 7-11, includes many of my favorites. Here are some examples.

Perce
The first one hour show, with guest star Ed Nelson

Chesterland
Chester proposes to Daisy Fair (Sondra Kerr).

The Gallows
Matt has to take Pruit Dover (Jeremy Slate) in to stand trial.

The Way It Is
Kitty gets mad at Matt.

Blind Man's Bluff
Matt gets in trouble in the town of Elkader (there was an earlier season 2 episode called "Brush at Elkader").

The Quest for Asa Janin
Matt tries to prevent a friend he believes is innocent from being hanged.

Hung High
A good episode with a memorable cast of character actors; Robert Culp, George Lindsey, Elisha Cook, Michael Conrad, Ed Asner and Harold J. Stone.

Circus Trick
The circus comes to Dodge City. Walter Burke and Warren Oates are among the guest stars.

The one-hour color shows, seasons 12-20, are the episodes currently broadcast on TV Land. I am listing just a few of my favorites.

Snap Decision
The first color episode. After the man he is trailing, an old friend, is killed, Matt decides to hang up his lawman badge. Michael Strong and Michael Cole give good performances.

The Wrong Man
Hootie Kyle (Carroll O'Connor) is a good man down on his luck.

Quaker Girl
William Shatner plays the devious outlaw Fred Bateman.

Nitro
A suspenseful two-parter also known as Tiger by the Tail. George McClaney (David Canary) needs money, and finds a dangerous way to earn it. The two shows aired in April 1967, a few months before David Canary joined the cast of Bonanza.

Stranger in Town
Pernell Roberts is professional gunfigher Dave Reeves. Jacqueline Scott also guest stars.

Mannon
Matt Dillon has to face the fastest gunfighter of his career, Will Mannon (Steve Forrest). A Gunsmoke classic.

The Gun
Kevin Coughlin plays a young man who idolizes gunfighters and wishes to become one. L.Q. Jones also appears.

Thirty a Month and Found
A look at cattle drovers, with Gene Evans as grizzled drover Will Parmalee.

Island in the Desert
A two-part classic from the show's final season. Strother Martin is Ben Snow, a hermit who lives in the desert, with rattlesnakes for pets.

The Busters
Gary Busey is a young cowboy injured after being thrown and kicked by a wild horse.

I'm not sure "Gunsmoke" ever improved on the orginal radio show. I always find the TV actors a little bland in comparison.

That said, I like any episode that has a big part for Festus.

I have only heard a handful of the radio shows. William Conrad, Parley Baer, Howard McNear and Georgia Ellis were the main cast members.

I thought Festus and Chester were both amusing sidekicks. Quint Asper was also entertaining.

Here Festus sings "The Ballad of Hawg Haggen" and explains what a Twisty is. I think it's from the season 11 episode "The Storm", but am not sure.

Is that what's wrong with Gary Busey? LOL

Could be, Kayleetara, lol. And years after getting thrown by the horse he had a similar experience with a motorcycle.

There are so many good episodes of Gunsmoke and Maverick to choose from but I'll pick a few that I never semm to get tired of watching.

GUNSMOKE:
Matt Gets It
The Preacher
The Killer
Brush at Elkader
Bloody Hands
Big Tom
Perce
Mannon
Morgan
The Widow Maker

MAVERICK:
Saga of Waco Williams
Stampede
Shady Deal at Sunny Acres
Point Blank
The Quick and the Dead
Relic of Fort Tejon
Day of Reckoning
The Belcastle Brand
Gun-Shy - Gunsmoke Parody...It's too bad the Bonanza parody "Three Queens Full" was crap.
Pappy
Ghost Soldiers
Hadley's Hunters
Cats of Paradise
Greenbacks Unlimited

I never cared for THE VIRGINIAN and I've only watched a few episodes. But I guess "It Tolls for Thee" with Lee marvin would be my favorite episode.

Gunsmoke: "The Gallows" 3/3/62

Jeremy Slate, (Gunnar Borgstorm in Bonanza's "Inger, My Love"), plays a basically good guy who kills a man in a drunken argument and is sentenced to hang. Matt has to deliver him to the hangman and befriends him through several misadventures, including one where he saves Matt's life. It tests his devotion to the law, especially when he meets the hangman and his crew, who seem more like criminals than Slate does. U-Tube has a brief clip fo the ending:

(And doesn't the town they are in look kind of familiar?)

The Virginian "West" 11/28/62

One of the greatest episodes I’ve ever seen of any TV show is the 10th episode of “The Virginian”, entitled simply “West”. Young Trampas isn’t sure he likes working under the hard discipline of The Virginian and when some old pals show up, (Claude Akins, Steve Cochran and James Brown-not the football player but the lieutenant from “Rin Tin Tin”), they convince him to live the wild and free life of the Old West. They get involved in various comical scrapes but the feeling grows in Trampas that you can’t really live like this any more, ignoring laws, trampling through people’s lives and not taking responsibility for your actions. Eventually, the web of reality closes on Trampas and his friends and the episodes ends tragically with their deaths. Trampas escapes and is satisfied to return to the Shiloh ranch, a sadder but more mature young man, willing to put something into life to get something out of it. U-Tube has a brief clip of this episode:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSYveXI7cCA
It reminded me of the relationship between Prince Hall and Falstaff and his companions in Shakespeare: a young man who enjoys his friends but realizes he must progress beyond them.

Maverick: "Greenbacks Unlimited" 3/13/60

Gage Clark plays an old friend of Bret's who has come upon a gold mine: he lives right next to a bank vault. He's go a hidden door to it and just takes out what he needs. Bret knows his friend will get in trouble and they have to put any missing money back. Then he hears the bank is about to be robbed. He and his friend do the bank a favor by emptying the vault and keeping it's contents in Clark's room while Dehner and his friends crack an empty vault. Dehner then hatches a scheme to blackmail the bank president: he wants money or he'll tell everyone the vault is empty. The bank president shows him the vault, which is now full again, (because Bret and his pal put everything back. So Dehner decides to rob the bank again. And.... The facial reactions in this one are priceless!
Sorry, I couldn't find a clip for this one. This was the last episode of the least season James Garner was on the show but they had one episode of Garner's they showed the next year, "The Maverick Line, (11/20/60), so this wasn't quite Garner's last appearance in the show that made him famous.
