Gunsmoke (1955-1975) ran for twenty seasons on CBS.

There are many of the early half-hour episodes that I haven't seen in a long time. One favorite is "How to Kill a Woman" from season three, with Pernell Roberts as a badman named Nat Pilcher.


The one-hour black and white era, season 7-11, includes many of my favorites. Here are some examples.

Perce
The first one hour show, with guest star Ed Nelson

Chesterland
Chester proposes to Daisy Fair (Sondra Kerr).

The Gallows
Matt has to take Pruit Dover (Jeremy Slate) in to stand trial.

The Way It Is
Kitty gets mad at Matt.

Blind Man's Bluff
Matt gets in trouble in the town of Elkader (there was an earlier season 2 episode called "Brush at Elkader").

The Quest for Asa Janin
Matt tries to prevent a friend he believes is innocent from being hanged.

Hung High
A good episode with a memorable cast of character actors; Robert Culp, George Lindsey, Elisha Cook, Michael Conrad, Ed Asner and Harold J. Stone.

Circus Trick
The circus comes to Dodge City. Walter Burke and Warren Oates are among the guest stars.


The one-hour color shows, seasons 12-20, are the episodes currently broadcast on TV Land. I am listing just a few of my favorites.

Snap Decision
The first color episode. After the man he is trailing, an old friend, is killed, Matt decides to hang up his lawman badge. Michael Strong and Michael Cole give good performances.

The Wrong Man
Hootie Kyle (Carroll O'Connor) is a good man down on his luck.

Quaker Girl
William Shatner plays the devious outlaw Fred Bateman.

Nitro
A suspenseful two-parter also known as Tiger by the Tail. George McClaney (David Canary) needs money, and finds a dangerous way to earn it. The two shows aired in April 1967, a few months before David Canary joined the cast of Bonanza.

Stranger in Town
Pernell Roberts is professional gunfigher Dave Reeves. Jacqueline Scott also guest stars.

Mannon
Matt Dillon has to face the fastest gunfighter of his career, Will Mannon (Steve Forrest). A Gunsmoke classic.

The Gun
Kevin Coughlin plays a young man who idolizes gunfighters and wishes to become one. L.Q. Jones also appears.

Thirty a Month and Found
A look at cattle drovers, with Gene Evans as grizzled drover Will Parmalee.

Island in the Desert
A two-part classic from the show's final season. Strother Martin is Ben Snow, a hermit who lives in the desert, with rattlesnakes for pets.

The Busters
Gary Busey is a young cowboy injured after being thrown and kicked by a wild horse.

I'm not sure "Gunsmoke" ever improved on the orginal radio show. I always find the TV actors a little bland in comparison.

That said, I like any episode that has a big part for Festus.

I have only heard a handful of the radio shows. William Conrad, Parley Baer, Howard McNear and Georgia Ellis were the main cast members.

I thought Festus and Chester were both amusing sidekicks. Quint Asper was also entertaining.

Here Festus sings "The Ballad of Hawg Haggen" and explains what a Twisty is. I think it's from the season 11 episode "The Storm", but am not sure.

Could be, Kayleetara, lol. And years after getting thrown by the horse he had a similar experience with a motorcycle.

There are so many good episodes of Gunsmoke and Maverick to choose from but I'll pick a few that I never semm to get tired of watching.

I never cared for THE VIRGINIAN and I've only watched a few episodes. But I guess "It Tolls for Thee" with Lee marvin would be my favorite episode.
