Why not an occassional appearance back on the Ponderosa?

Pretending he never existed was ridiculous. I still think the perfect solution was to send him off to Washington as Nevada's first senator. He could have come back to run for re-election.

They could have recast the role, but that probably would not have gone over well with viewers. At the very least, a final episode could have shown one of the boys, maybe Adam, tie the knot for good. I like your idea of him becoming a senator...there could've been a corrupt campaign manager trying to access Ben's fortune to help finance Adam's bid for Congress.

...and the Comstock Lode. The Mining tycoons and railroad tycoons want their hands on the Ponderosa and back a candidate against Adam so they can get their hands on it.

Exactly. Sounds like a winning script to me.
