Subject: Pernell and the end of the show

We know that Lorne Greene was very outspoken about NBC's unceremonious dumping of the show in the middle of the final season. I wonder if they had known about the cancellation in advance, if Pernell could have been persuaded to come back for the last episode. I would like to think we would've seen Adam again with a proper send-off for the Cartwrights. Thoughts?

Why not an occassional appearance back on the Ponderosa?

Pretending he never existed was ridiculous. I still think the perfect solution was to send him off to Washington as Nevada's first senator. He could have come back to run for re-election.

They could have recast the role, but that probably would not have gone over well with viewers. At the very least, a final episode could have shown one of the boys, maybe Adam, tie the knot for good. I like your idea of him becoming a senator...there could've been a corrupt campaign manager trying to access Ben's fortune to help finance Adam's bid for Congress.

...and the Comstock Lode. The Mining tycoons and railroad tycoons want their hands on the Ponderosa and back a candidate against Adam so they can get their hands on it.

Exactly. Sounds like a winning script to me.

NBC didn't care because the cast got paid for the season and they gave them 3 days notice (hardly any at all) and Dan had died less than 6 months before. Mike tried to stop them from canning it, but he knew it was useless. I give him credit. He loved the show. Dave Canary spoke of this in 2002 and you can see his interview at You Tube. Part 2 of 5-BONANZA.

As for Pernell, Kent McCray told me they had no plans to bring him back in 1972. I'm sure Mike would have liked to, as he said supposedly said this this at some point after the cancellation, but that could be anyone's guess as to Pernell's availability and desire. In 1972, Pernell told Henry Darrow at a party, "I have no regrets."

It really is a shame they didn't get the chance to end the show properly. Of course, we know that Pernell went on to do a fabulous job a few years later in 'Trapper John M.D.'

Yes, in those days there was no ceremony at the end. They just axed the shows and moved on. A lack of dignity and respect for sure. Would have been nice to see Pernell come in at the last one that Mike would have helmed.

It seems to be a nice gesture if he could have come back for an ending. But he would not have done it. He did not want to have anything to do with BONANZA.

And I think the last episode should have addressed Hoss' death. That, plus Adam's return, would have been the perfect closure.

Yes, it needed a better ending than those few followup movies. And I still think Jack Lord would have done justice to the Adam role. A character too interesting to just vanish. But they had no need to worry about syndication then. Now the seasons are so short, down from 32 to 20 now 8-10weeks. Dallas just started in mid June and had its season finale a few weeks ago. Borderline shows like the new Nikita, which lacks the charisma and style of the old Wilson/Dupuis show, and Michelle Geller's Ringer may be brought back for another season just to get enough shows to syndicate. adamseve
